Roots in the wild
Babies, Backpacks & Borders
Adventure, family, and life on the road — one wild season at a time
Welcome to Roots in the Wild — a family travel & adventure lifestyle blog about raising a little explorer, full-time RV life on the road, and finding wild places wherever we happen to call home. Around here, life is a mix of babies, backpacks & borders — and all the beautiful, messy adventures in between.
From nursing in creek beds and changing diapers in rest stop parking lots to campground mornings, mountain trails, long travel days, and adventures that rarely go according to plan, this is where I share what choosing a different kind of life actually looks like.
Part travel story, part practical resource, and part journal from the road — because adventure looks a little different when you're bringing a toddler, two dogs, and your entire home along for the ride.
So grab a cup of coffee — or reheat the one you forgot about two hours ago 😉 — and come wander with us. The wild is calling, and we’re learning that our deepest roots are often found when we least expect them.
First time here?

Stories From the Wild
Adventure, Family, and The Stories We Collect Along The Way
Hi, I’m Ally!
I’m a coffee-fueled, adventure-chasing mama, writer, and longtime traveler who believes some of the best stories happen when life doesn’t go according to plan.
For years, my husband Zach and I have called the road home — traveling in vans, a converted school bus, and now an RV, chasing new places and building a life that gives us a little more freedom to wander. These days, the adventure looks different with our little boy, Banks, and two dogs along for the ride, but if anything, it’s made the stories even better.
Roots in the Wild is where I share those stories — the campgrounds and backroads, mountain trails and beach days, long travel days, unexpected detours, and the everyday moments that happen somewhere in between. You’ll find honest stories from our life on the road alongside practical travel tips, family adventures, and things we’ve learned from years of making home wherever we park it.
We don’t always know where we’re going next, and things rarely go exactly as planned.
But I’m learning that’s usually where the adventure begins.
Traveling with a one-year-old has changed the way we travel—but maybe not in the ways I expected. From naps and snacks to diaper changes, dogs, and frequent rest stops, here’s what our travel days actually look like with a toddler in tow.
